Bryan Naelitz of Amherst participates in Summer Scholars program at Washington University in St. Louis

Bryan Naelitz of Amherst, OH (44001), participated in the Summer Scholars Program in Biology and Biomedical Research at Washington University in St. Louis. Naelitz, who was one of 25 Summer Scholars this year, will be a freshman at the university when the fall semester begins Aug. 28.

The seven-week Summer Scholars program offers students the opportunity to get a head start on scientific research and their college careers. The program is designed to meet the needs of interested students from a variety of backgrounds, providing accessible, yet challenging research opportunities.

Students are selected for the program based on their academic background, interest in scientific research, an essay and teacher recommendations. Students must submit a freshman application to Washington University and indicate an interest in one of the sciences offered by the College of Arts & Sciences or in biomedical engineering or biological and engineering sciences through the School of Engineering & Applied Science.

In the first week of the program, students work together in the lab to master selected basic research skills, including techniques used in molecular biology. For the following six weeks, they work with a mentor in a research lab to apply these tools to research problems.

Washington University is counted among the world's leaders in teaching and research, and it draws students and faculty to St. Louis from all 50 states and more than 110 nations. The total student body is nearly 14,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students.

The approximately 3,400 faculty teach in seven schools: Arts & Sciences, Brown School, Olin Business School, Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, School of Engineering & Applied Science, School of Law and School of Medicine. Twenty-three Nobel laureates have been associated with Washington University, with nine doing the major portion of their pioneering research there.

The university offers more than 90 programs and almost 1,500 courses leading to bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in a broad spectrum of traditional and interdisciplinary fields, with additional opportunities for minor concentrations and individualized programs.
